June 2018

Later this year, nominations will open for odd numbered Region Representatives, President-Elect, Vice President, and Treasurer. We are also wanting to appoint a Legislative Assistant, who would take over the Legislative Chair position. Consider supporting your profession and organization by running for one of these positions. Email notifications will be sent out in the fall.

2018 CAPNI Practice Survey

If you have not completed the CAPNI Practice Survey, please use the link below to complete it. This survey helps APRNs discuss our barriers with legislators and policy makers in the upcoming year. It also helps us understand the needs of our members.

Legislative efforts in the 2018 session accomplished great things! Two important bills were signed by the Governor.

  • HB 1119 authorizes advanced practice nurses and physician assistants to sign and execute provider order of scope of treatment (POST) forms.
  • SB 410 changes the term "advanced practice nurse" to "advanced practice registered nurse”. Updating Indiana law to reflect the current modernized title ensures consistency with national standards and clarifies Indiana APRNs’ ability to use and advertise their title as an advanced practice registered nurse. It also changes the requirements for APRN education to master or post-master and requires certification or equivalency for prescriptive authority.  While this bill does not make any changes to nursing practice, it does help the state take steps to closer align with national standards and provides an excellent platform for highlighting the role NPs are playing in meeting health care needs.

The effective date for both of these bills is July 1, 2018.

It is now more important than ever for you to contact your state senator and state representative about this legislation.  If you need to identify your state legislators go to:

To assist you with this, CAPNI has developed updated letter templates.   These templates are in outline form to enable one to draft a personalized letter.  Legislators prefer not to receive multiple, identical form letters.  To access this letter template, go to the Legislative Affairs tab on the CAPNI website and then go to the CAPNI State Policy Tool Kit.   There are also letter templates for physicians and health care consumers for you to share with other supportive stakeholders.

One of CAPNI’s missions is to provide continuing education opportunities to APRN’s.  Mark your calendars for the following future CAPNI sponsored conferences. Please see the website to register:
